There are many Troop web pages out there, most of them give the reader information about that particular troop; and most of those web pages are used as a recruiting tool. This page will tell the reader about the adventures and fun in scouting; it is designed to get you interested in scouting, and interested in looking into a troop near you.

How a Troop is Set up

All troops have multiple units called Patrols. These Patrols have different names, flags and yells/cheers; patrols also have leaders under the age of 18 called Patrol Leaders (PL). The members of a patrol elect patrol Leaders, PL’s generally take shifts between 4 to 6 months. The entire troop elects a scout under the age of 18 as their SPL (Senior Patrol Leader). He makes all of the big decisions. PLC’s (Patrol Leader Councils) are held periodically to get input of the individual patrols for events in the troop.

Troop Events

Troops do different kinds of activities. They go on high adventure activities such as mountain climbing, SCUBA diving, and other activities. Troops go on campouts to different places all over the US! Troops also go on ‘treks’ such as 50-mile canoe, hiking and or biking trips. Some troops have gone beyond the barrier of 50 miles and have made trips across the Unites States on wheels. Some troops save to go on once in a life time summer camps, such as traveling to Hawaii. The adults do not make these decisions, the boys do. If one of the Scouts wants to go to the Rocky Mountains, all he needs to do is make a proposal to at a PLC. The PLC will vote and make a decision.

The Pheonix Patrol

All Troops are different, as well as their Patrols, I am going to tell you about my troop and my patrol. Troop 606 generally goes on campouts once a month except in December because the first rule in our troop is to have fun. The troop has gone to a verity of campsites, from the San Juan Islands in north Washington to Baker City in south Oregon. The Phoenix Patrol is newly formed based off of the scouting idea of the older scouts help the newer scouts with their scout skills. Despite the new formation of the patrol it has had a lot of fun. Troop 606 went to Camp Baldwin for Summer Camp in 2006. The summer camp staff believe in the Patrol Method. Phoenix had to work out their differences through the teamwork that was involved in cooking and cleaning. Phoenix has the opportunity to have many more campouts together where scouting memories will be made. I, being a senior scout in my patrol and believing strongly in the scouting principles, has started teaching the newer scouts their skills outside of the regular troop meetings. They have learned how to use axes, knives and building fires. The scouts got a cool demonstration of different ways to extinguish fires, including a powder fire extinguisher. As the patrol grows I will add content to the ‘Phoenix Patrol Activities’ Page. Pictures should be available in the Photos page.
